JR Seasonal Specials

One of my favorite things about being close to a JR station is the fact that JR often has fabulous deals on local all-you-can-ride tickets.  Four times a year JR puts out a new Kansai One Day pass, which allows you to ride the JR lines in Kansai for one day for only 2900 yen.  For me, a trip to Nara, Kyoto or Shiga prefectures is definitely worth the money.  Of course, the savings depends on where you live and where you are going.  But if you are planning to do a lot of traveling during the day, this is often a good deal.image

What sweetens the deal even more is that included in the price of this JR pass is a voucher you can trade in at other railway companies’ stations for more free travel.  For example, this season’s one day pass covers the Keihan Railway into Shiga Prefecture, as well as a ride on the tourist boat Michigan.  Or, you can choose to visit Sakai or Sumiyoshi in Osaka prefecture using Nankai railways and local buses.

Often, foreign residents don’t bother to look at the new brochures that JR posts outside of their offices and in the station.  I often find myself being the first to tell my friends about this pass.  So spread the word about this discount ticket, and the next time you are going to take an expensive day trip, go to your Midori no Madoguchi (green ticket window/office) and ask for the “(Insert Season Here) no Kansai One Day Pass.”

Here are the seasons for your reference:  Spring (Haru/春), Summer (Natsu/夏), Fall (Aki/秋), Winter (Fuyu/冬)
